Arizona has a way of making an ordinary sunset worth planning around.
The famous cougar shadow is returning to the Superstition Mountains this September. As the evening light hits the rugged cliffs, a shadow resembling a crouching cougar takes shape across the mountain. The seasonal sight appears around the spring and fall equinoxes, and this week’s viewing window runs through September 19, according to KJZZ’s September 15 report.
One recommended viewing area is near Superstition Boulevard and Goldfield Road in Apache Junction. Plan to arrive before sunset, give yourself time to find a safe, **and legal** place to park and keep an eye on the changing light. Clouds or inclement weather can affect visibility, and the shape only lasts a short time!
One detail to know before heading out: Visit Mesa says the cougar shadow cannot be seen from inside Lost Dutchman State Park.
