Featured in the September 2026 issue of Arizona Highways, the property at Tal Wi Wi traces its beginnings to the 1940s. The McCarthy family took over in 2024 and has been updating the lodge while keeping its rustic character.
The property has 20 rooms, with improvements including refreshed bedding and modern conveniences. Some rooms also have fireplaces or hot tubs.
Its restaurant has returned, too. Shadows opened in 2025, bringing dining back to the lodge with a seasonal menu that includes locally sourced ingredients.
Located off U.S. 180 north of Alpine, the lodge offers a starting point for exploring the White Mountains and nearby trails around Escudilla. It’s the kind of Arizona story that makes you pull out a map and start thinking about your next road trip.
