Arizona welcomes the rain, but this latest round has come at a cost. While storms bring much needed moisture to the desert, flash flooding has dealt another setback to the Grand Canyon’s recovery.
A flash flood on Wednesday, September 16, damaged temporary repairs intended to help restore water service to the South Rim following August’s flooding.
According to Arizona’s Family, crews reached safety before the flood arrived, and no injuries were reported.
What happened to the repairs?
Crews began assessing damage Thursday, including the temporary water intake at Bright Angel Creek. That assessment will help determine the next steps and whether the restoration schedule needs to change.
There is some encouraging news: the new pipeline infrastructure on the canyon’s south side escaped damage in both floods.

What visitors should know
The North Rim and Highway 67 reopened Thursday around noon after a temporary closure, according to the report. Stage 4 water restrictions remained in place, with visitors asked to conserve water and bring their own when possible.
